This product is a triazole-type plant growth regulator that inhibits endogenous gibberellin biosynthesis; it also enhances the activity of indole-3-acetic acid oxidase in rice, thereby reducing endogenous IAA levels in seedlings. It markedly weakens apical dominance, promoting the proliferation of lateral buds (tillers), resulting in compact, robust seedlings with numerous tillers, deep green foliage, and well-developed root systems. Anatomical studies show that paclobutrazol reduces cell size in roots, leaf sheaths, and leaves while increasing the number of cell layers in these organs. Tracer studies indicate that rice seeds, leaves, and roots can all absorb paclobutrazol. Most of the paclobutrazol absorbed by leaves remains localized at the site of uptake, with very limited translocation to other parts of the plant. At low concentrations, paclobutrazol enhances photosynthetic efficiency in rice leaves; at high concentrations, it suppresses this efficiency. It increases root respiration intensity while decreasing shoot respiration intensity, raises stomatal resistance in leaves, and reduces leaf transpiration, thereby facilitating the regulation of rice growth.
